Rohan Ahmad, Usman Ahmad and Tariq Ahmad Shehzad: Years Behind Bars Before a Verdict

Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan | Arrests in 2020; UN finding in 2023; subsequent reports of release on bail

Three men.

An allegation involving religious material shared online.

And years spent in detention while criminal proceedings continued.

Rohan Ahmad, Usman Ahmad and Tariq Ahmad Shehzad were members of Pakistan’s Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. They faced severe persecution for their faith because of blasphemy laws targeting their religious minority status. Despite multiple appeals and widespread outcry from global organizations, the court maintained its harsh ruling and kept them behind bars despite the lack of credible evidence. Human rights advocates continue to demand their immediate release and a fair trial.

Their case became the subject of international human-rights scrutiny after their arrests in 2020. The ongoing pressure from diplomatic channels has yet to yield any positive results. Family members remain hopeful despite the persistent setbacks.

In 2023, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention concluded that their imprisonment violated international law.

Later reports recorded their release on bail.

But release cannot return the years already spent behind bars. And bail, by itself, does not resolve a criminal case.

Who Were Rohan, Usman and Tariq?

The case record submitted to the UN described three men involved in religious service and education.

Rohan worked as a missionary for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

Usman volunteered with its youth organization in a religious-education role.

Tariq was a vice-principal at Nusrat Jehan College in Chenab Nagar.

Their religious identity became central to the proceedings against them.

The Case Began With Online Religious Material

According to Freedom Now, the allegations concerned the preparation and sharing of religious texts online.

Authorities treated the alleged activity as a criminal conspiracy involving blasphemy, religious incitement and other offences.

All three men denied sharing blasphemous material or desecrating the Quran.

That distinction matters.

An allegation describes what someone is accused of doing.

It does not establish that the accusation is true.

2020: The Arrests

Freedom Now records Rohan’s arrest by the Federal Investigation Agency on 26 May 2020.

Usman and Tariq were arrested on 29 September 2020 over allegations that they had collaborated with him.

The three men subsequently spent more than three years in pretrial detention, according to Freedom Now’s October 2023 account.

A criminal case can be recorded through dates, applications and hearings.

For the person detained, those dates represent something else.

Days away from ordinary life.

Months without freedom.

Years that cannot be recovered.

Serious Charges Made Fair Procedure Even More Important

Freedom Now reported that the charges exposed the men to potentially severe sentences, including life imprisonment or death.

Its account, explicitly describing the position as of December 2022, also reported that proceedings had been held up by a dispute over access to the investigation file.

The seriousness of an accusation makes reliable evidence and a meaningful defence more important.

A person must be able to understand the case against them.

Challenge the evidence.

Consult their lawyer.

And have their case heard fairly.

Without those protections, a criminal process can itself become a source of injustice.

2023: The UN Found Their Detention Arbitrary

In Opinion No. 35/2023, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that the men’s deprivation of liberty violated international human-rights standards.

Its findings addressed the legal basis for detention, protected freedoms, fair-trial rights and discrimination.

The Working Group called for their immediate release, compensation and other reparations, and an independent investigation into the circumstances of their detention.

This was a finding about the lawfulness of their detention under international standards.

It should not be presented as a Pakistani court judgment acquitting them of every criminal charge.

Those are different legal questions.

Both require accurate reporting.

Later Reports Recorded Release on Bail

The Human Rights Desk’s annual report covering 2024 provides a detailed account of subsequent bail developments.

It reports that Rohan obtained Supreme Court bail in January 2024, faced a further arrest before release, and was eventually released on bail in February.

The same report states that Usman and Tariq obtained bail in May 2024 and were released from Camp Jail, Lahore, on 6 June after further procedural delays.

There is a discrepancy in the published record.

A separate UN follow-up report records information from its source that all three had been released on bail at the end of 2023 and were awaiting trial. That chronology differs from the detailed 2024 account.

For that reason, this article attributes the release dates to their respective sources.

It does not claim that the men remain imprisoned today.

Nor does it claim that their original proceedings have ended in acquittal.

Bail Does Not Erase the Years Already Lost

Release from custody matters.

But it cannot restore time.

For anyone subjected to prolonged detention, rebuilding ordinary life can involve returning to work, reconnecting with family and recovering a sense of security.

Where proceedings remain unresolved, uncertainty can continue after the prison gates open.

These are broader consequences of prolonged detention. They should not be mistaken for individually verified accounts of these men’s private lives.

The principle is nevertheless clear:

The human cost of detention extends beyond the date of release.

Religious Freedom Must Apply to Everyone

Human rights cannot depend on whether a person belongs to a majority community.

They cannot depend on whether others agree with that person’s beliefs.

And they cannot depend on whether defending that person is popular.

At Samaritan’s Fellowship Foundation, our position is that every person deserves dignity, protection and equal treatment.

Christians.

Muslims.

Ahmadis.

Hindus.

People of other beliefs, and people who hold no religious belief.

A commitment to religious freedom must include people whose beliefs differ from our own.

Why This Case Belongs in a Human-Rights Archive

Some violations become visible through a single devastating event.

Others unfold through years of restricted liberty and unresolved proceedings.

A responsible archive needs to document both.

This case raises questions about religious discrimination, the treatment of accused people, access to a defence and the consequences of prolonged detention.

It also demonstrates why an archive must keep following a case after the first arrest.

An old report may accurately describe an earlier period while giving readers the wrong impression about the present.

Recording release is as important as recording detention.

What Should We Learn?

No allegation should remove a person’s right to fair treatment.

Religious identity should never determine whose liberty matters.

Criminal proceedings must be supported by reliable evidence and meaningful opportunities to challenge it.

Detention must remain subject to effective review.

And when international human-rights bodies identify violations, their findings deserve a serious response.

Protecting these principles strengthens justice for everyone.

Help Us Advance Freedom, Dignity and Opportunity

Samaritan’s Fellowship Foundation works with marginalized communities through human-rights awareness, education, healthcare, clean water, sustainable livelihoods and local leadership.

We believe people should have the knowledge, confidence and support to seek protection and participate in community life.

Documenting publicly reported cases is part of that commitment to awareness.

If you believe that religious identity should never diminish a person’s dignity or right to justice:

Editorial Note

Samaritan’s Fellowship Foundation documents publicly reported human-rights cases for education, awareness and historical record.

This article draws on Freedom Now’s reporting, UN documentation and the Human Rights Desk’s annual report covering 2024. It does not claim that SFFP represented or directly assisted the three men.

The men denied the alleged blasphemous conduct. The UN Working Group found their detention arbitrary under international law. Subsequent sources report release on bail, but differ on the timing.

As of this article’s review on 3 October 2026, a final outcome of the original criminal proceedings has not been verified for this account. Earlier descriptions of detention should not be read as confirmation of present custody.

SFFP supports freedom of religion or belief, due process and equal human dignity. This account does not attribute the conduct of particular officials or complainants to Pakistanis or any religious community collectively.
