COMMITMENT TO LASTING CHANGE

Our Approach

Our approach combines community participation, human rights principles, and constructive engagement with institutions. We listen to people’s experiences, work with them to identify priorities, and connect practical support with opportunities for lasting independence. Accountability, safeguarding, and learning guide how we design and improve our work.

The Values That Guide Us

SFFP advances six interconnected thematic priorities.
Together, they guide our efforts to protect human rights, address inequality, strengthen communities, and create lasting opportunities for dignity, independence, and meaningful participation.

FREEDOM

We believe every person should be free from exploitation, coercion, and discrimination, with the ability to exercise their rights and make informed choices about their own life.

PEACE

We value nonviolence, mutual respect, and freedom of belief. Dialogue across religious and social differences helps build trust and enables communities to resolve concerns peacefully.

INCLUSION

We believe everyone deserves equal dignity, opportunity, and a meaningful voice. We give particular attention to people whose experiences and perspectives are excluded from decisions affecting them.

DEMOCRACY

We uphold freedom of expression, peaceful participation, pluralism, and public accountability. Our commitment is to informed citizenship and meaningful representation through peaceful, nonpartisan engagement.

EMPOWERMENT

We respect people’s ability to shape their own futures. Access to knowledge, skills, resources, and opportunities enables individuals and communities to make decisions and exercise greater control over their lives.

SUSTAINABILITY

We value change that communities can sustain over time. Local ownership, responsible use of resources, and lasting skills and livelihoods guide our commitment to long-term independence.

OUR APPROACH IN PRACTICE

How We Work With Communities

Our work begins with people’s experiences and priorities. We connect practical support with rights awareness, community leadership, and constructive engagement with institutions. Each programme adapts to local circumstances, with participation and learning throughout.
STEP 01
Listen & Understand

We listen to community members to understand their concerns, existing strengths, and the barriers affecting their rights, safety, and opportunities. We give particular attention to people whose voices are often overlooked.

STEP 02
Agree Priorities Together

We work with communities to identify priorities and shape a practical response. People’s choices, local knowledge, and available resources help guide the actions and support needed.

STEP 03
Connect Support & Build Capacity

We connect practical support with rights awareness, education, and relevant skills. Depending on the programme, this may include family recovery, access to essential services, leadership development, or livelihood support.

STEP 04
Engage Institutions & Advance Solutions

We bring community concerns into constructive dialogue with relevant institutions, civil society, and other stakeholders. Community perspectives and responsible documentation inform advocacy for fair treatment, accessible services, and responsive decisions.

STEP 05
Review, Learn & Adapt

We follow up with participants to understand what has improved and where barriers remain. Community feedback and programme learning help us adjust support and strengthen opportunities for lasting independence.

Participation, inclusion, and safeguarding guide every stage. We revisit priorities as people’s circumstances and needs change.

The Principles Behind Our Work

We seek lasting improvements in people’s freedom, safety, participation, and economic independence. These outcomes guide our programme design and help us assess progress alongside the communities we work with.

Community Participation

People affected by an issue should help shape the response. We value local knowledge, informed choices, and meaningful participation, with particular attention to voices that are often excluded.

Human Rights & Equal Dignity

Every person deserves dignity, equal treatment, and the freedom to exercise their rights. Non-discrimination, freedom of belief, and peaceful democratic participation guide our work across communities.

Constructive Partnerships

We work with communities, civil society, and relevant institutions around shared concerns. Cooperation respects our independence and keeps community priorities central to dialogue and action.

Accountability & Transparency

We are responsible to the communities we work with and those who support our mission. Clear communication, responsible use of resources, and openness to feedback guide our decisions and relationships.

Safeguarding & Do No Harm

People’s safety, dignity, privacy, and informed participation come first. We consider risks when planning activities, documenting concerns, and sharing stories, with particular care for children and people facing heightened vulnerability.

Evidence, Learning & Improvement

Community experiences, responsible documentation, and programme learning inform our decisions. We review what is working, recognise limitations, and adapt our approach as needs and circumstances change.

What Lasting Change Looks Like

We seek lasting improvements in people’s freedom, safety, participation, and economic independence. These outcomes guide our programme design and help us assess progress alongside the communities we work with.
